A-B Roll 1.9.6 — Build 10018

Your rundown just became a delight to operate.

A-B Roll 1.9.6 transforms the sidebar into a faster, friendlier live-production rundown. Arrange sources in show order, give them meaningful names, and navigate confidently with either the mouse or keyboard.

Shape your rundown your way

  • Drag and drop to reorder — Put sources into the exact sequence your production needs.
  • Move Up and Move Down — Make precise ordering changes without dragging.
  • Rename sources — Replace unwieldy filenames with clear, operator-friendly aliases.

Move faster from the keyboard

  • Use the Up and Down Arrow keys to move through your rundown.
  • Long rundowns automatically scroll to keep the keyboard-selected source visible.
  • Your existing Q/W, A/S and Z/X operator controls remain ready for fast live playback.

Shortcuts when you need them

The complete operator shortcut guide now appears near the top of Settings and is also available from Help → Operator Shortcuts…

Polished for live production

Selection, reordering, removal and Player Well loading now work together more naturally. Sources keep their identity and aliases as they move, while loaded and playing wells remain undisturbed.

Altogether, 1.9.6 makes A-B Roll feel less like a media list and more like a true live-production rundown.

Known Wirecast limitation

If Wirecast is quit and reopened while connected to an active A-B Roll NDI source, Wirecast may reconnect to the video without resuming its audio. A-B Roll continues transmitting audio normally, and this behaviour has not been reproduced in OBS or NDI Video Monitor.

To restore audio in Wirecast, remove and re-add the source, or toggle the affected A-B Roll NDI output off and on.

This update is recommended for all A-B Roll beta users.

Build 10017 v1.9.5 Rundown reset and usage signal

A-B Roll 1.9.5 — Build 10017

A-B Roll 1.9.5 improves rundown control, keyboard workflow, privacy-aware usage metrics, and production troubleshooting guidance.

Clear Playlist

The playlist sidebar now includes a Clear Playlist… action. A confirmation explains that the playlist, Player A, and Player B will be cleared. The empty rundown is saved immediately, and the action is disabled when the playlist is already empty.

Faster keyboard rundown control

Use Up Arrow and Down Arrow to move through playlist rows without wrapping, then use Q or W to load the selected item into Player A or Player B. Operator Shortcuts are now shown near the top of Settings and are available from Help → Operator Shortcuts…

Anonymous usage metrics controls

A-B Roll now includes an optional Share anonymous usage metrics setting, enabled by default and available in Settings → Privacy. These aggregate reports help us understand app opens, versions in use, and Free versus Professional usage. They do not include filenames, paths, playlists, NDI source names, media content, license keys, or customer information. Turning the setting off stops future reports.

Improved NDI network troubleshooting guidance

The tester and support guidance now includes practical steps for diagnosing NDI issues related to network congestion, Remote Desktop traffic, Wi-Fi, adapter and switch link speed, competing transfers, and network topology.

Stability and hardening

The release candidate passed focused smoke testing across Player A and Player B, playlist reset and keyboard operation, Privacy settings, licensing surfaces, NDI receive/transmit, and the in-app update surface.

Build 10016 v1.9.4 Operator workflow update

A-B Roll 1.9.4 — Build 10016

A-B Roll 1.9.4 is a release-candidate update focused on operator workflow, playlist/rundown reliability, and faster live-show control.

This release makes the playlist sidebar much more useful during real production work: local rundowns now persist across launches, playlist items can be reordered, long filenames are easier to inspect, the sidebar can be resized, and common Player A / Player B actions can be triggered from the keyboard.

This update is recommended for all beta and release-candidate testers.

What's New

Persistent local playlist / rundown

Local media and image items in the playlist now persist across app launches.

Previously, quitting and reopening A-B Roll meant rebuilding the playlist from scratch. In 1.9.4, local media/image rows are restored automatically, in order, when the app reopens.

Player A and Player B still intentionally start empty on launch so operators can decide what to load.

Resizable playlist sidebar

The playlist sidebar is now resizable.

You can drag the divider to make the rundown wider or narrower depending on the show. The sidebar width is remembered across launches.

This is especially helpful for longer filenames and more complex run-of-show playlists.

Move Up / Move Down playlist ordering

Playlist rows can now be reordered from the right-click context menu.

  • Move Up
  • Move Down

The order is saved and restored on the next launch for local media/image rows.

Single-key operator controls

A-B Roll now includes fast keyboard controls for common Player A / Player B actions.

  • Q → Load selected playlist item to Player A
  • W → Load selected playlist item to Player B
  • A → Play / Pause Player A
  • S → Play / Pause Player B
  • Z → Clear Player A
  • X → Clear Player B

These shortcuts are designed as two simple operator lanes: Player A uses Q / A / Z, and Player B uses W / S / X.

Keyboard controls are active when the main A-B Roll window is focused and no text field or picker is active.

Operator Shortcuts in Settings

A new Operator Shortcuts section has been added to Settings / Preferences.

This gives testers a quick reference for the Q/W/A/S/Z/X controls without needing to remember them from release notes.

Filename hover tooltips

Long filenames in the playlist can now be inspected by hovering over the playlist row text.

This makes it easier to confirm the correct media item without widening the sidebar or guessing from a truncated name.

Fixes and Improvements

More reliable loaded-item tracking

Player A / Player B playlist badges now track items by stable identity instead of by playlist position.

This means badges stay attached to the correct item after removal or reordering.

Remove-from-playlist state sync fixes

Removing playlist items is now more reliable.

This fixes cases where removing an item could briefly make Player A / Player B badges appear on the wrong row or leave the current playlist selection out of sync.

Current playlist selection follows removals correctly

When removing an item above the selected row, the current playlist cursor now adjusts correctly.

This helps keep keyboard loading and playlist selection behaviour predictable.

Release telemetry dashboard repaired

The A-B Roll funnel telemetry endpoint used by the MixUp dashboard has been restored.

The dashboard now reports aggregate purchase/revenue counts again without exposing emails, license keys, Stripe IDs, media names, NDI source names, or other private data.

Known / Intentional Behaviour

Player A and Player B start empty on launch

Even when the playlist restores, Player A and Player B do not automatically reload previous media.

This is intentional for now. Operators should manually load the desired item into Player A or Player B.

NDI playlist rows do not restore yet

Local media and image rows persist across launches.

NDI source rows do not currently restore after quit/reopen because live NDI sources need a safer reconnect/disconnected-state design before they can be restored reliably.

Drag-to-reorder is not available yet

Playlist reordering is currently handled through right-click playlist row → Move Up / Move Down.

Drag-to-reorder remains planned for a future update.

Thumbnails are not included in this release

Playlist thumbnails are still under consideration, but were intentionally deferred to keep this release focused and stable.

Summary

A-B Roll 1.9.4 is one of the strongest operator-workflow updates so far.

It does not add new output formats or external control APIs. Instead, it focuses on making A-B Roll feel better during actual live-production use: faster control, more reliable rundown handling, clearer playlist state, and a sidebar that finally adapts to the operator.

Known limitations

Current testing focus.

These known limitations remain outside the shipped 1.9.7 scope.

First-frame motion wake

First-frame, freeze, and motion-wake behavior remains under investigation in issue #106.

Wirecast audio reconnect

After Wirecast is quit and reopened, an active A-B Roll NDI source may reconnect without audio. Remove and re-add the source, or toggle the affected A-B Roll NDI output off and on.

NDI playlist persistence

NDI playlist rows do not yet restore between launches. Local media and image rows restore, while Player A and Player B intentionally start empty.

MKV playback

MKV playback depends on the container and codec. MP4, MOV, and M4V remain the recommended formats.

A-B Roll 1.9.3 — Build 10015

A-B Roll 1.9.3 is a beta release focused on NDI output persistence, operator trust, source-swap reliability, still-image output, and media playback control.

This update is recommended for all beta testers.

What's New

More reliable NDI outputs

A-B Roll's Player A and Player B NDI outputs now behave more like stable live-production sources.

NDI outputs can now be enabled before media is loaded. When a Player Well is empty, A-B Roll still publishes a stable NDI source with placeholder output instead of leaving downstream software with a missing or broken source.

This improves workflows in Wirecast, OBS, vMix, and other NDI-capable production tools where operators want to set up sources before loading media.

NDI sources remain available after clearing media

Clearing or unloading media from a Player Well now keeps the same NDI source alive.

Previously, removing media could cause the NDI source to disappear or leave downstream receivers in an unclear state. In 1.9.3, the source returns to placeholder output while remaining discoverable.

This makes A-B Roll safer to use during live production because downstream source assignments are less likely to break during media changes.

Improved source swap behaviour

A-B Roll now handles empty to media, media to image, image to media, and unload to placeholder transitions more predictably over NDI.

The goal is simple: once a downstream tool is connected to "A-B Roll Player A" or "A-B Roll Player B," that source should remain understandable and recoverable as content changes.

Still images now output correctly over NDI

Still images now output reliably over NDI using a normalized 16:9 frame.

Images are aspect-fit into the output canvas with black bars where needed. Transparent images are composited over black for predictable downstream display.

This makes still images more useful as show cards, slates, graphics, placeholders, and other live-production assets.

New per-well media Loop control

Local media playback now includes a per-well Loop control.

Loop is available for media files and hidden for NDI sources, still images, and empty wells. When enabled, a media clip automatically restarts after reaching the end. When disabled, the clip holds at the end as before.

Loop state is remembered per Player Well during the session, making it easier to treat Player A and Player B like operator-controlled decks.

Improvements

  • NDI outputs can be enabled before media is loaded.
  • Empty Player Wells now publish stable NDI sources.
  • Clearing media returns the same NDI source to placeholder output.
  • Still images now output reliably over NDI.
  • Still images are normalized into a predictable 16:9 output frame.
  • Media files now support per-well Loop playback.
  • Loop controls are only shown when relevant.
  • NDI behavior is more stable across source swaps, receiver launch order, unloads, and app relaunches.

Recommended Testing

  • Enable NDI output before loading any media.
  • Connect Player A or Player B in Wirecast, OBS, or another NDI receiver.
  • Load media into the same Player Well and confirm the source updates without needing to reconnect.
  • Clear the media and confirm the source remains visible as placeholder output.
  • Load a still image and confirm it appears correctly over NDI.
  • Try the new Loop control with a short media clip.

Notes

A-B Roll 1.9.3 continues the beta focus on reliability and operator confidence. This release does not change licensing, pricing, or the public download flow.
