A-B Roll

Release Notes

A-B Roll 1.9.4 is the current recommended macOS release. Download the latest version or browse recent release history below.

Release focus

Keep testing real workflows.

A-B Roll is improving quickly. The current testing focus is reliability across real NDI receiver setups and operator workflows.

NDI receiver behavior

Please test source discovery, receiver launch order, reconnects, unloads, and app relaunches in OBS, Wirecast, vMix, NDI Monitor, and other NDI tools.

Media transitions

Try empty wells, media files, still images, clearing media, and placeholder output to confirm the downstream source stays understandable.

Tester feedback

Please report your Mac model, macOS version, NDI receiver app, and screenshots or logs if something fails.

A-B Roll 1.9.3 — Build 10015

A-B Roll 1.9.3 is a beta release focused on NDI output persistence, operator trust, source-swap reliability, still-image output, and media playback control.

This update is recommended for all beta testers.

What's New

More reliable NDI outputs

A-B Roll's Player A and Player B NDI outputs now behave more like stable live-production sources.

NDI outputs can now be enabled before media is loaded. When a Player Well is empty, A-B Roll still publishes a stable NDI source with placeholder output instead of leaving downstream software with a missing or broken source.

This improves workflows in Wirecast, OBS, vMix, and other NDI-capable production tools where operators want to set up sources before loading media.

NDI sources remain available after clearing media

Clearing or unloading media from a Player Well now keeps the same NDI source alive.

Previously, removing media could cause the NDI source to disappear or leave downstream receivers in an unclear state. In 1.9.3, the source returns to placeholder output while remaining discoverable.

This makes A-B Roll safer to use during live production because downstream source assignments are less likely to break during media changes.

Improved source swap behaviour

A-B Roll now handles empty to media, media to image, image to media, and unload to placeholder transitions more predictably over NDI.

The goal is simple: once a downstream tool is connected to "A-B Roll Player A" or "A-B Roll Player B," that source should remain understandable and recoverable as content changes.

Still images now output correctly over NDI

Still images now output reliably over NDI using a normalized 16:9 frame.

Images are aspect-fit into the output canvas with black bars where needed. Transparent images are composited over black for predictable downstream display.

This makes still images more useful as show cards, slates, graphics, placeholders, and other live-production assets.

New per-well media Loop control

Local media playback now includes a per-well Loop control.

Loop is available for media files and hidden for NDI sources, still images, and empty wells. When enabled, a media clip automatically restarts after reaching the end. When disabled, the clip holds at the end as before.

Loop state is remembered per Player Well during the session, making it easier to treat Player A and Player B like operator-controlled decks.

Improvements

  • NDI outputs can be enabled before media is loaded.
  • Empty Player Wells now publish stable NDI sources.
  • Clearing media returns the same NDI source to placeholder output.
  • Still images now output reliably over NDI.
  • Still images are normalized into a predictable 16:9 output frame.
  • Media files now support per-well Loop playback.
  • Loop controls are only shown when relevant.
  • NDI behavior is more stable across source swaps, receiver launch order, unloads, and app relaunches.

Recommended Testing

  • Enable NDI output before loading any media.
  • Connect Player A or Player B in Wirecast, OBS, or another NDI receiver.
  • Load media into the same Player Well and confirm the source updates without needing to reconnect.
  • Clear the media and confirm the source remains visible as placeholder output.
  • Load a still image and confirm it appears correctly over NDI.
  • Try the new Loop control with a short media clip.

A-B Roll 1.9.2 — Build 10014 Public RC polish update
Build 10014 v1.9.2 Public RC polish update

A-B Roll 1.9.2 — Build 10014

Superseded by 1.9.3. A-B Roll 1.9.2 was a public RC polish update focused on operator confidence, clearer upgrade paths, more responsive NDI source selection, steadier playlist controls, and clearer NDI output state.

This update was recommended for all beta and public RC testers.

What's new

  • New License menu. A-B Roll now has a dedicated top-level License menu for upgrading to Professional and opening license activation from inside the app.
  • Public Help menu cleanup. Release Notes now points to this public page on mixup.live, A-B Roll Website replaces the old beta site link, and the redundant Help → License / Upgrade item has been removed.
  • Faster NDI source picker feedback. The NDI source picker now opens immediately when clicking Add NDI Source and shows a clear searching/loading state while discovery runs.
  • More stable playlist row controls. A/B load controls now stay in fixed positions, and the unload control no longer causes row controls to jump around when a source is loaded.
  • Clearer NDI output labels. Active/Inactive labels are now Output On/Output Off, and receiver status now uses No Receivers / N Receiver(s) language.
  • Stronger A/B visual identity. Player A is consistently blue and Player B is consistently purple throughout the app.
  • Cleaner public release builds. Developer diagnostics are now hidden from public release builds while remaining available in development builds.

Archive note: This release has been superseded by A-B Roll 1.9.3. If you already have it installed, confirm the app reports Version 1.9.2 / Build 10014.
